This, in my opinion, is the best 1/100 HG grade Gundam kit you can buy. The Astray red frame is a distant second.

The Akatsuki is gold... not yellowish with a tint of gold but reflective gold, making this kit stunning to look at. My wife rates this as the most good looking Gundam kit i own. I hope this is more of a reflection on how good the Akatsuki looks, as opposed to my painting skills.

As the name implies, this Akatsuki comes with both the Oowashi and Shiranui packs.

The Oowashi back pack looks similar to the winged back pack found on the Aile Strike Gundam but in gold with minor differences. The wings are foldable and it has a pair of energy rifles that you can maneuver to allow the Akatsuki to shoot from the hips.

The Shiranui pack meanwhile comes with seven remote rifles that can be detached from the pack. The kit comes with an action base which allows you to position the Gundam in a flying pose. The base is not adjustable and is quite tall.

Apart from the two back packs, the Akatsuki comes with an energy shield, a beam rifle, and two sabres that can be combined to make it a double sabre, like the one used by Darth Maul.

Posability is mediocre in this kit, especially if you are comparing it to Master Grade models. You can still put it in exciting poses but more adventurous modelers might get frustrated trying to get anime accurate action.

My biggest issue with this Gundam is that you cannot get it to stand and pose properly with the huge backpacks it comes with. It naturally is not as well built and designed as Master Grade kits so it struggles to balance itself properly. It also suffers from weak joints, especially over time.

Despite this, I rate ths as the top non MG kit I own. It looks great and has plenty of equipment to keep it interesting. I just can't wait until they release a Master Grade version of this.

This Dom is the first Master Grade Gundam kit I owned. Dated pictures estimated that I got this kit back in 2005.

At the time, I was still relatively inexperienced with Gundam kits and basically had no idea what I was doing. I ended up partially painting it with a weird colour scheme and ended up loving the result.

It has been more than a decade since and the colouring has faded in some areas and turned yellow in others.

It was time for a new paint scheme. I had no trouble coming up with a colour combination as I have always been a fan of the Char Aznable version.

Getting the colours right posed a challenge…. It wasn’t easy to get the shades to look like they should especially with my guestimate way of mixing paint.

I airbrushed this using Faskolor paint – usually used for polycarbonate bodies of radio controlled vehicles. I have found that these paint stick well to Gundam plastic (especially with Tamiya primer) and they are much easier to work with than Tamiya paints.

I am a fan of big mechs and the Dom is an impressive looking giant. This kit certainly does justice in terms of showcasing the size and majesty of the mech. Weapons include two canons and cartridges, a rifle, a bean sabre and grenades. Simple but enough choices to allow the modeler to tell a story.

Posability of this kit can be broken down into two parts. The upper half features some of the best hands ever made for 1/100 scaled Gundam kits. Each figure is independently joined and is robust enough to look good.

The shoulder has a good range of movement though not as articulated as some of the newer Master Grade kits. It also has a movable eyepiece and a head that rotates to the left and right.

The lower half of the body is not as impressive. The waist is constructed from two sections so you get the usual flexibility but movement of the legs is limited due to the skirted design of the armor. It still provides enough movement for you to position the mobile suit in iconic poses as seen in the anime… just don’t expect it to do any splits.

I would definitely recommend fans of the Gundam series to pick up this kit. It might lack the gimmicks that other Master Grade kits may come with but it looks great and its size and unique design definitely sets it apart from the other Gundam models out there.

MG RX78 Ver Ka

Master Grade RX78 Ver Ka - A classic that will never go out of style

  

The RX78 is definitely the most iconic Gundam of all time.

Hailing from the Mobile Suit Gundam series, this mech has inspired and paved the way for some thirty Gundam anime series, movies and spinoffs.


It is a definite must-have for fans of the series and my model of choice is the Ver Ka edition.
One can immediately see that this is no run of the mill RX78. Hajime Katoki has added his special touches to it as can be seen from the more aggressive design and unique decals.
This kit will definitely stand out as a centrepiece on your display shelf.

I painted mine in accordance with the original colour scheme but added gun-metal paint to the top coat to give it extra depth. It is either a hit or a miss with those who have seen it but I felt the extra touch made it more endearing.

This model comes with the usual armament of beam sabers, a rifle, a canon and a shield.
There is no gimmick associated with these weapons but they do add to the playability and posability of the model.


It also comes with a separate waist piece so you can display the core fighter.

The RX78 Ver Ka is not as posable as some of the newer models. But you get the impression that it was never designed to do so. This is definitely a case of form over function.

You can still get plenty of poses from this model but it lacks the articulation of the more recent Master Grade kits.

This is definitely a good pick up for anyone looking to add an RX78 to their collection. It may be lacking in armament and articulation but it makes up for it with it's smart looks and classic design.

A worthy kit even among today's newer Master Grade lineups.
